Nick Walters

Seeking expression in multidisciplinary practice, Nick combines a range of artistic disciplines in his endeavor for creative accomplishment, finding synergy between technical excellence, artistic creativity and academic progression. Specializing in dance and performance art, Nick is also a practicing freelance visual artist and has worked extensively in the field of arts management within the creative sector.

After finishing Dux of his high school Nick completed two years of university study in a Bachelor of Architecture / Construction Management, during which time he became a member of Impetus Dance Theatre Company and furthered his ballet and contemporary training with Emma Madden at Expressions Ballet Academy.

 

Subsequently, Nick was offered a full academic scholarship to undertake the Bachelor of Creative Arts (Dance) with a minor in creative entrepreneurship at Deakin University in 2010. He was also accepted to partake in the National Theatre Ballet Schools’ Part Time Transition Course under the direction of former Principal Dancer Beverly Jane Fry. In 2011 Nick differed his University studies to accept an invitation the complete the full time Diploma of Arts (Classical Dance) with the National Theatre Ballet, where he danced the Principal role of Franz in Coppelia.

About The Author

Nick has worked extensively in the arts and cultural sector, working with Ausdance victoria in 2011 as a curator for the ‘Dance Your Heart Out’ series as part of Dance Massive, as well as promoting himself as a freelance artist, creating visual artworks such as the large-scale ink-on-glass work at Bourke Streets ‘That Place’ Café.


Nick is currently completing his final year of tertiary studies at Deakin University and continues to work as a freelance performer, having recently danced at the 2012 Melbourne International Food and Wine Festival, as well performing at Federation Square with Suara Indonesia Dance as part of Melbourne’s Viva Victoria Festival.

Nick has an avid interest in exploring the breakdown of technique in classically based contemporary dance as well as creating works which question what constitutes dance and how dance is stereotyped in modern society. The ability to work academically in the creative arts sector, as well as create choreographically challenging works has been complimented by fundamental technique training in ballet and contemporary dance, which Nick endeavors to explore as a freelance artist, as well as pursuing a career in Arts Management and the Creative Industries.



Nick is currently the Creative Director of artist co-operative !835 Creative. This organisation are the organisers of the Homemade Festival, an annual launchpad for the debuting artists of the creative industries. This festival aims to provide a transition for creatives including up and coming film makers to establish themselves in the professional context. Nick is interested in exploring Australian Film further to discover how best to create opportunities for the next generation of Australian film directors.
